The Remediation Group

Typical projects

Members of our team have assisted a variety of companies to tackle a broad spectrum of remediation challenges. The following is a brief summary.

Oil companies

Groundwater remediation 1

Repairs, modification and additions to existing equipment to treat hydrocarbon contamination in groundwater at a terminal site. The unit had been designed for another site, de-commissioned, moved and re-commissioned and was operating intermittently and at low recover levels. Read full case study

Groundwater remediation 2

Design, construction, installation, and successful completion of the first Australian risk-reward Based remediation project. This system targeted separate phase contamination plumes and provided bioremediation on adsorbed hydrocarbons within overlaying soil strata. The design is based on modular, skid-mounted treatment units which include a water treatment cell, soil vapour extraction cell and control unit, which were manufactured off site and transported to the property for final assembly and start-up. The entire process parameters and control can be affected remotely via a state-of-the-art programmable logic controller with personal computer interface. The site control and data acquisition(SCADA) systems System operates non-stop within "real time" system data and parameter changes via a CITECT ® interface.

Groundwater containment

Design of a system to restrict off-site migration of groundwater contaminated by hydrocarbons, located under a petrol service station. The system had to withstand very high wet season flows and remain fully operational to approved levels.

Soil remediation 1

The design, construction and installation of Australia’s first water motive MPVE system, to target separate phase contamination plumes and adsorbed hydrocarbons within soil. Now used on multiple sites (Whitsanes (QLD), Brisbane (QLD), Port Henry (VIC), Adelaide (SA), Maroochydore (QLD).

Soil remediation 2

Design and construction of several bioremediation soil cells (bio-piles) to treat a large area of hycrocarbon contamination. Bio-piles were up to 2,000 cubic metres in area and were used to reduce hydrocarbon levels to below the 1994 Dutch Environmental Pollutant Standards (Hervey Bay, QLD)

Chemical companies

Soil remediation 1

Design and construction of a plant to remediate soil contaminated by xylene, volatile and semi-volatile solvents, under order from an environmental authority. In situ soil bioremediation was augmented by water treatment via biodegradation and carbon adsorption of organics and chemical precipitation, clarification, and filtration of naturally occurring metals. The team processed nearly 125,000 tons of soil while constructing a 4-acre in situ bio-cell in 10 months. The plant also addressed discharge levels for naturally occurring metals to enable discharge to an adjacent trout stream. (New York, USA)

Soil remediation 2

Design, construction, installation, and successful operation of a pilot Catalytic Oxidiser to treat soil vapour extracted from a sparged exploded basalt formation. The equipment was retrieved from a site in another country, reworked off-site to meet Australian standards, transported to site and assembled and re-commissioned on site. The entire process parameters and PLC control interlocks were reworked and additional safety interlocks added. All of the systems were inspected and approved by the relevant authorities. The pilot system can operate non-stop with real time data collection possible via a CITECT ® interface and proved completely successful. A full-scale system is currently being designed. (Altona VIC)

Infrastructure/utility companies

Wastewater treatment 1

Various wastewater treatment plant design projects, wastewater process audits, audits for storm water collection devices (Royal Australian Air Force, Royal Singaporean Air Force).

Drinking water purification

Electrical design and specification back-up on a water supply and aquifer monitoring network within a river catchment area (Pulau Karimun Besar, Indonesia).

Developers

Groundwater treatment 1

Design, construction, installation and commissioning of the first system approved by the EPA for long term in situ groundwater treatment and hydraulic containment. The system has enabled rezoning and sale of land for residential purposes, while ensuring continuous, compliant, long term remediation. Read full case study

Groundwater treatment 2

Design, construction, installation and commissioning of a system to treat and contain groundwater from an industrial site. The treated water is suitable to be discharged to sewer, and the vapour suitable for discharge to atmosphere within EPA guidlines. (Thomastown, VIC)
